Letter, 1862 Feb. 20, Columbia, S.C., to Robert E. Lee.

Request from Lt. Col. Preston, Mustering Office, Columbia, S.C., requesting that Enfield Rifles be issued to Capt. [John?] Jenkins; with appended response from Lee, 25 Feb. 1862, indicating that the guns were reserved for regular troops. This letter is believed to refer to Capt. John Jenkins (1824-1905). Jenkins organized a company of mounted riflemen in Charleston District. His command was mustered into Confederate service as an independent company 17 Feb. 1862.
